That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming

Summary

All I wanted to do was live my life in peace. Maybe get a cat, expand my spice farm. Really anything that doesn’t involve going on a quest where an orc might rip my face off. But they say the Goddess has favorites. If so, I’m clearly not one of them.

I mean, I get it. Don’t get me wrong. But he’s dragging me along for the ride, and I’m kind of peeved about it. On the bright side, he keeps burning off his shirt. After saving the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, all he wanted to do was kill an evil witch enslaving his people.

Hot Takes

What We Liked

Jems

As you might be able to tell from the title, this book doesn’t take itself too seriously—and that’s what makes it so great. We loved the laughs and the very charming demon lover who could talk the panties right off you. Who said you can’t have spice and a good laugh in the same book? Not Kimberly Lemming!!

What We Didn’t Like

Listen, I’m gonna start by saying I had a fun time. However. The internal monologue is the kind of internal monologue that I just really don’t like. It felt a little over the top and some of the thoughts were in quotes instead of italics which might also be a publishing error but I stand by it.

This book utterly charmed me! As a fanfiction girlie, I loved the book’s conversational writing and its lighthearted tone. The cast of human and mythical creatures were varied and diverse all while being relatable and fun. As far as the fantasy elements go, there is some world building but this reads more like an adventure than a true fantasy as it’s light on plot.

Ok so I know what you’re thinking ā€œoh he’s a monsterā€ sure yes it’s true but that’s coincidental. What brings this up to an eight pep is entirely the second half of the book, which had me telling my cat to please leave the room, he’s too young for this kind of story. The way they dirty talk each other during the spice scenes had me like 😳 although sometimes the euphemisms for different… members and digits… pulled me out of it a bit (there’s no way to say that without sounding dirty, you’re welcome).
